What is the STIFF Movie Trailer Challenge?
This year we decided to take the challenge in yet a new direction. We decided to have teams compete to make a fake movie trailer, think Grindhouse or Tropic Thunder. Please no trailers for an existing film or a production you are currently involved in. Our Goal is to promote cooperation among film makers and bring together the local film making community. The STIFF Fake Trailer Challenge is a collaborative film project where filmmaking teams compete to put together the best fake movie trailer over a 10 day period. It kicks off on Friday, April 29th 2011 and ends on May 9th 2011.
Why did you change the name from the STIFF Film Challenge?
Every year, we try to enhance the Film Challenge to keep it fresh and push the local talent pool to reach outside their comfort zones and create something exciting. We think fake trailers give the film makers an excellent opportunity to exercise creative license and come up with something truly unique.
Isn't this just a total 48 Hour Film Contest rip-off?
When we first started doing the Weekend Film Challenge, there were some similarities between it and the 48 hour film contest (to be fair though, there was no 48 Hour Film Contest in Seattle back in those days). Several years ago, we decided that we wanted to continue evolving the STIFF Film Challenge into something unique, collaborative and unconstrained; and have continued to do so. To the best of our knowledge nobody is doing a fake movie trailer competition.
Who is going to see the movie?
All films completed as part of the Movie Trailer Challenge will be screened at STIFF 2011. Filmmakers, families and friends are invited to check out all of the films in front of an audience.
What should it be about?
hrow your creativity into overdrive. Of course we reserve the right to not show the film if it is completely offensive, but as long as you aren't making a snuff film you will probably be OK.
What kind of prize do I win?
Prizes are to be determined, but in years past we have been able to give away rental and post-production services at Victory Studios and Glazers Camera as well software packages from Entertainment Partners, posters autographed by Moby and a host of other goodies.
How is the contest judged?
The trailers are judged the way that films were intended to be judged by an audience. Audience members will be voting on their top 3 favorite trailers. Pandering is acceptable as is stuffing the audience full of friends and family. The top film will receive a STIFFY that will be presented at the awards ceremony.
What happens to the movie our team makes?
The movie is your property. STIFF will screen the film at STIFF 2011, but aside from that you can do whatever you want with your movie.
How do I enter?
Team captains should send their team rosters to filmchallenge@trueindependent.org ASAP. The email should include the team captain's phone number, mailing address and team name. The Organizers will get in touch with all captains to let them know the status of their entry.
What should my movie be submitted on?
Quick Time or AVI files submitted on optical disk are best. It always help to verify your delivery format to ensure you are using a compatible codec.
Do you need titles or credits?
Make it look like a movie trailer.
